Mission & Vision

The Hera Giving Circle funds small, locally-based organizations in San Francisco providing basic support to women, children, and families. We envision a thriving community where all women, children, and families are housed, safe, healthy, nourished, and connected.

Founding Story

The Hera Giving Circle was founded in 2021 with the goal of creating meaningful impact and connecting more deeply with the city we all live in and love. During the height of the pandemic, the founding members of Hera witnessed our San Francisco community struggling and united to help. We recognized that by working together, we could learn from one another and gain a better understanding of how to support our neighbors locally.

Our Namesake

In Greek mythology, goddess Hera was celebrated as the protector of women and childbirth. We chose Hera as our namesake because it reflects our commitment to supporting the well-being and empowerment of women, children, and families in our community.

San Francisco Foundation

Founded in 1948, the San Francisco Foundation is one of the nation’s largest community foundations — a grantmaking public charity dedicated to improving life within a specific local region. SFF’s mission is to mobilize resources and act as a catalyst for change to build strong communities, foster civic leadership, and promote philanthropy in the San Francisco Bay Area. We are honored that all Hera Giving Circle donations are held in our Donor Advised Fund (DAF) at the
San Francisco Foundation.

Power of Giving Circles

As one of the fastest-growing philanthropic vehicles in the country, giving circles are projected to give $2.9 billion by 2025. A collaborative and participatory approach to philanthropy, giving circles bring together people with common interests and concerns, for proactive learning and to support causes that matter to them. We are proud to be part of a movement that's changing the face of philanthropy by uniting people through collective giving and meaningful impact.
